Overview
The university account describes strong sexual differences in Hypsignathus monstrosus. Males have an enlarged square rostrum, pendulous lips, snout flaps and cheek pouches. Females have a more fox-like muzzle and lack those extreme male features. Slate-brown fur, dark face and wing membranes, rounded ear bases and a pale shoulder collar characterize the selected account. Riverine forests and other wooded wet habitats feature in its range; inconsistent sex-specific mass bounds are not used as diagnostic measurements.
Bradbury studied calling assemblies for seventeen months using direct observations, captures and radio tracking of males and females between assemblies, feeding grounds and roosts. The public abstract concludes that these gatherings met even a conservative definition of a lek mating system. It does not supply one mandatory display-group size or prove that the enlarged face evolved for only one acoustic function. A solitary male portrait represents anatomy, not an authenticated recording of an entire mating arena.
