AI emerging Hydnora chamber flower.
AI interpretation of one emerging three-lobed flower; soil setting imagined.
Overview
The botanical account describes a chlorophyll-free parasite of Euphorbia. Its vegetative body remains underground. Emerging flowers have brown exteriors, salmon-orange interiors and three or four fleshy lobes with stout inner bristles. The illustrated three-lobed flower represents one permitted form.
A Namibian study observed visitation at two sites and tested beetle imprisonment and pollen viability. Beetles were detained during the female phase; changes inside the chamber enabled escape after pollen release. This is temporary pollinator retention rather than carnivorous digestion.
Bolin’s dissertation compared floral measurements with plastid and nuclear sequences. It supported Hydnora and Prosopanche as sister genera and distinguished cryptic taxa within the broad historical Hydnora africana concept. Host-root germination experiments described for Hydnora triceps must not be transferred to this species.
Origins & earliest records
Botanical morphology, a pollination study and a dissertation provide separate lines of evidence.
Evidence & interpretation
The pollination abstract retains experiments; the dissertation retains molecular and morphological scope. The image follows the botanical flower description.
