Overview

DreamWorks explicitly identifies Grump as a Hotburple, a Boulder-class breed related to the Gronckle. He turns molten minerals into lava projectiles, preferring iron ore to the ordinary rocks associated with Gronckles. At Gobber's stall, scrap eating and molten output make him a working forge companion. The same official profile gives Grump a sleepy, noisy and frequently inconvenient personality, including falling asleep in flight. The trade relationship therefore includes both practical usefulness and comic friction. The guide's walrus comparison describes his behaviour rather than explaining the origin of the species.

The School of Dragons specialist reference records the Hotburple's addition in October 2014 and describes a larger body and wings than a Gronckle, with eyes farther forward. Its store and combat implementation represents a playable dragon, whereas Grump's official story emphasises workshop labour. The secondary account's catlike personality comparison differs from the official walrus analogy; neither should be elevated into a universal animal ancestry claim. A resemblance in mineral feeding and general form supports comparison with Gronckles, while the publisher's explicit distinction prevents those two entries from becoming duplicate names.

First appearances & development

The selected film witness is the 2014 sequel and its official Grump guide. School of Dragons added a Hotburple later that year. Grump is a named member of the breed, and his distinctive forge role does not imply that every wild Hotburple naturally works beside a blacksmith.

Canon & continuity

The full official Grump profile and indexed Hotburple reference were inspected, alongside the sequel's publisher metadata. The game's morphology paragraph is itself borrowed from a fan species account, not presented as an original publisher manual. Official related-breed wording is retained without constructing a precise evolutionary tree.
