Overview

In the official English story Vows Unbroken, Francel remembers meeting Haurchefant outside a Fortemps dinner party. Barred from attending by the countess, the older boy practices swordplay instead, determined to become a capable knight. Sharing pudding begins a friendship in which Haurchefant repeatedly draws the quieter Francel into adventures, while Francel offers refuge from the anger and rejection surrounding his friend’s home life.

When bandits abduct Francel during a hunting trip, Haurchefant storms their cabin with a knife. He kills attackers and survives an arrow wound while overcoming another captor, who lives to recount the rescue. The seventeen-year-old earns his knighthood through this act. Francel’s later visit to the memorial, where he touches a battered shield, frames the recollection with grief and Haurchefant’s commitment to helping others.
