Modern AI interpretation of an empty abalone shell; fine texture and pore geometry are schematic.
Overview
Chile's natural-history museum account identifies Haliotis rufescens as a herbivorous gastropod of rocky northeastern Pacific shores. Its shell ranges from brick red to pink and may be covered with external algae. Typically three or four raised oval respiratory openings remain open. The iridescent interior carries a large oval muscle scar. These are shell-identification features, not a promise that every living individual has an identical clean surface or pore count.
Smithsonian's specimen record explains that a growing single shell covers the body. Its row of openings serves breathing, waste discharge and spawning, while the inner nacre forms the reflective layer. A muscular foot lets the animal clamp against a surface. An empty-shell interpretation can show openings and shell shape, but cannot demonstrate that living response or internal soft anatomy. The record's harvest-permission statement is dated and is excluded rather than treated as current policy.
