AI orbweaver with six red abdominal spines, white dorsum and black legs.
AI scientific interpretation of an imagined Florida adult female.
Overview
UF/IFAS describes Florida females with white upper abdomens, black spots and red spines; legs and underside are black. Females measure 5–9 millimetres long and 10–13 wide. Smaller males lack those large spines. Other regions have different colours, so this selected Florida appearance is not universal.
Bukowski, Linn and Christenson presented males to females with different mating histories. Males usually copulated twice with entirely virgin females, once per reproductive tract, releasing nearly all their sperm. Encounters with previously inseminated tracts more often ended after one copulation; sperm release was uncommon but complete when it occurred.
Female history affected copulation frequency and sperm release, not duration. Cannibalism frequency did not differ across treatments. The authors interpreted behaviour through sperm-use patterns rather than elevated risk of being killed; their experiment does not establish every wild mating outcome.
Origins & earliest records
An institutional diagnosis and a controlled behavioural study address different biological scales.
Evidence & interpretation
The study separates observed mating responses from interpretation of their function.

A hierarchy of classified groups, not a chain of direct ancestors.
