Overview
Garuje is described as a brother of Sarikin Rafi who hates whispering and punishes people who do it. His supposed peacemaking is deliberately violent in the account: confronted with ten fighting men, he twists the necks of four, beats four others lifeless and takes out the remaining two’s eyes. He then declares the quarrel settled. The figures belong to the narrated example, not an authenticated historical incident.
The performance has a different bodily sequence: circling, moving to and fro, kneeling, beating the chest, jumping, sneezing and leaving. The song asks him to save the speaker from shame, says that a whisperer was punched and finally requests a garment as a reward for the musicians. The appeal for protection beside his destructive intervention makes the spirit’s role more specific than a generic benevolent mediator.
