Modern AI interpretation of a selected female phasmid; fine spines and leaf-like lobes are schematic.
Overview
Perth Zoo describes Extatosoma tiaratum females as brown or green and covered in thorn-like projections, while males are smaller and have long functional wings. The selected female form therefore differs from a slender flying male. The zoo records a Queensland and New South Wales distribution, eucalyptus feeding and a defensive posture that arches the abdomen above the body. This curled outline mimics foliage or resembles a scorpion posture without turning the insect into a stinging arachnid.
The Australian Museum describes eggs with a capitulum attractive to ants. Ants carry eggs underground, consume the knob and leave the remainder. Newly hatched nymphs resemble red-headed black ants and later become slower leaf mimics through moulting. These observations distinguish an early developmental disguise from the adult female's appearance. Different institutional incubation estimates and general statements about other phasmids are not combined into one universal timetable or a species-specific reproductive claim.
