Overview
Erenna sirena is the angler siphonophore in MBARI’s current animal account. A siphonophore consists of connected specialized zooids: some propel the colony, while others feed. This deep-midwater predator uses luminous red lures among its stinging tentacles to attract small fishes. The colony’s organization differs from a single bell-shaped jellyfish, and the listed size and depth describe the institutional account rather than an invariant measurement of every individual.
The 2005 MBARI discovery report described an unnamed Erenna species. It located swimming bells in the upper colony and feeding tentacles below, with thin side branches carrying movable red lures. Observers found fish in digestive tissues; lure shape, repeated motion and localized light supported a prey-attraction interpretation. At least one digestive system held both fish and lures. The historical label remains explicit here: the newer species name must not be silently inserted into the original report.
