Overview
Eoandromeda is known from fossils in South Australia and South China. A 2011 study by Tang and colleagues reconstructed it as a high cone bearing eight spiraling arms. They read transverse bands on the arms as comb plates and proposed that it was a swimming stem-group ctenophore lacking crown-group features.
A 2023 study by Botha and colleagues examined more than 200 specimens from Nilpena in the Rawnsley Quartzite. They combined rotational geometric morphometrics with environmental evidence and found that distortion aligned with former currents points to flexible tissue. Most fossils are flattened, but less collapsed examples support a raised cone.
Those authors favored a seafloor-dwelling mode of life and rejected a ctenophore link, citing inconsistencies in ecology and symmetry. The two reconstructions differ on both lifestyle and relationships, and neither has settled the question. Eoandromeda remains a useful test case for comparing Ediacaran body plans with living animal groups such as comb jellies.
Origins & earliest records
Recorded from Ediacaran rocks. The date of first formal description is not given because the original description was not consulted.
Evidence & interpretation
Compression fossils, including a large Nilpena sample, interpreted through morphometric and taphonomic analysis.
