Overview

These creatures are presented through unstable forms and hostile encounters rather than as a tidy biological species with a shared measured anatomy. The dimensions they inhabit offer little of the solidity found in the ordinary world, making access to Discworld's reality an object of desire. Concentrations of magic can weaken the boundary or draw their attention, so wizardly power is also a route through which danger can arrive.

Several early novels use them to complicate the assumption that more magic is always a better answer to a threat. The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites and Sourcery give different encounters and consequences, with individuals and unstable forms left within one broad profile. They are distinguished from ordinary bogeymen and from demons whose existence follows a different story logic. The bounded account avoids inventing a single breeding system, planet, maximum size or civilized political society for a collection explicitly defined by its relation to reality and magic.

First appearances & development

Early Discworld novels develop Dungeon Dimensions incursions, with The Light Fantastic in 1986, Equal Rites in 1987 and Sourcery in 1988 supplying the primary bibliography here. This entry uses a collective descriptive category, not a newly coined uniform taxon. The reviewed chronology does not rely on a guide's misattribution of Trymon's event to The Colour of Magic.

Canon & continuity

The independent dimensions guide identifies unstable beings, attraction to magical power and several exact novel appearances. Its Trymon book attribution is corrected by the known Light Fantastic context and is not repeated. The named novels are selective primary witnesses; no claim is made that every threatening extra-reality being elsewhere in the franchise belongs to this category.
