Overview
Hokkaido University's field account places Diphylleia grayi in Berberidaceae and describes a perennial herb of forests and their edges in Japan and Sakhalin. Small white flowers have six petals and six stamens, with several flowers forming a cluster at the stem top. Broad foliage and spreading underground rhizomes contrast with the delicate flowers. The account lists older combinations under Diphylleia cymosa; those naming records do not make every member of that broader genus the same selected species.
A Japanese research-grant report describes petals becoming translucent when wet and outlines microscopy of their surface and cross-section. It also reports artificial polymer films that switch from white to transparent on contact with water and back during drying. The retained indexed report supports the observed wet-petal change and a materials analogy. It does not establish a benefit to pollination, an instantaneous response to every raindrop, or transparency in all other Diphylleia species. Its broader geographic wording is not used to expand the field-account range.
