Overview

The Río de Jesús heritage account places the haunting in Las Rosas, where farmers left crops in temporary huts. Strange footprints, tangled hair, sulphur smells and apparently eaten charcoal signalled supernatural occupants when the farmers returned. The annual performance brings a farmer and his son to the hut; the emergence of witches and demons drives them away.

An angel carrying a large cross then arrives with the festival queen. The demons refuse to surrender their shelter until the queen burns it, sending them fleeing toward nearby hills. This staged burning opens Festival Mi Ranchito. The dancers and actors are community participants representing the supernatural figures, and the hut is an essential dramatic setting.

Origins & earliest records

The Ministry of Culture's heritage record was updated on 2 June 2025. It describes a community group's research and revival of a declining performance, but gives no dated original collection or first festival enactment. Its agricultural backstory is an attributed local oral account, rather than a documented supernatural event.

Records & interpretation

The complete Sicultura record, maintained by the national heritage directorate, was inspected. It supplies the plot, locality and safeguarding context, but does not identify individual narrators or give the performers' costume specifications. The profile therefore describes their actions without inventing horn counts, colours, masks or a universal Panamanian devil type.
