Dewback

Overview

Dewbacks are sturdy reptilian mounts associated with Tatooine. Their low, heavy bodies and thick hides give them a markedly different appearance from the towering, shaggy bantha. The official Databank describes them as usually slow but capable of a short burst of speed, a distinction that prevents their plodding movement from being mistaken for complete immobility.

Film depictions and later series place dewbacks within travel and patrol contexts, showing an animal used by inhabitants rather than an automatically hostile monster. A New Hope's different editions also matter to its screen presentation, so footage should be labeled by version where exact visual evidence is needed. The reference gives only a limited biological account; diet, breeding behavior and domestication history are not invented to fill those gaps. Reliability as a mount does not establish identical behavior for every individual.
