Overview
A fulvous whistling-duck has a plump body, long neck and long legs. Cinnamon head and underparts contrast with dark folded wings. White flank streaks and pale neck stippling add contrast. Bill and legs are blue-gray; the short black tail contrasts with white rump and undertail feathers.
Cornell describes dabbling and tipping forward into water, with occasional diving. The birds take seeds and aquatic invertebrates in shallow wetlands. Feeding often occurs at night; whistling flocks move between roosts and feeding places around dawn and dusk. Rice fields, freshwater marshes and ponds provide characteristic habitat.
The University of Oslo museum places Dendrocygna bicolor in Anatidae and Anseriformes. Its collection account records a broad distribution across North, Middle and South America, Africa and the Oriental region. Listed study skins from India and Mozambique document museum holdings; they are specimen records rather than a current population census.
