Overview

Smithsonian's Caribbean account describes Dactylopterus volitans with a blunt head enclosed in bony armour, a small lower mouth and an elongated body tapering toward the tail. Adult pectoral fins open into large fans; their variable brown-yellow colouring includes pale spots and brilliant blue markings. The account places the fish over sand or mud, often near reefs. The common name is not evidence of sustained aerial flight.

A primary English Channel specimen report recorded a fish with a broad blue-marked pectoral fan, grey to yellow-brown body, white spots and a blunt snout. The authors compared these traits and fin-ray counts with identification literature to support D. volitans. The measurements concern that particular collected fish, not a required size or one fixed colour for every individual. A northern occurrence record also does not by itself demonstrate a permanent breeding population or a climate-driven range shift.
