Modern AI interpretation of genus-level form; nanoscale surfaces and species identity are not certified.
Overview
Cystisoma crystal amphipods inhabit open water rather than consistently riding gelatinous hosts. MBARI describes an almost transparent body, very large eyes and thinly spread retinal tissue. Researchers have watched these crustaceans tear tissue from a comb jelly with their pincers. The account treats several species together; neither its maximum size nor its broad range identifies one particular species.
Bagge, Osborn and Johnsen examined seven hyperiid taxa using electron microscopy. In five Cystisoma specimens they found ordered protrusions on the legs and also documented a layer of tiny spheres. Optical models predicted reduced surface reflection, with the amount depending on wavelength, viewing angle and layer thickness. The abstract explicitly excludes internal light scattering. These structures explain a camouflage mechanism; they do not establish perfect invisibility or certify a generated specimen.
