Overview

NIES 4391 records Chromera velia from Plesiastrea versipora coral in Sydney Harbour, Australia, collected on 7 December 2001. Its aliases include RM12 and CCAP 1602/1; the maintained culture is clonal but non-axenic.

Using RM12, a 2012 study measured oxygen evolution, carbon fixation and pigment responses under different light conditions. Maximal photosynthetic rates remained similar under continuous low and high light, while pigment composition and protective responses changed.

The experiments support flexible acclimation in a photosynthetic relative of apicomplexan parasites. Retained photosynthesis informs comparisons with their nonphotosynthetic plastids, without identifying Chromera as their direct ancestor or assuming that coral isolation establishes an obligate symbiosis.

Origins & earliest records

NIES records collection in December 2001; CCAP gives collection circa 2002 and authority Moore et al. 2008. The catalogues’ dating disagreement is preserved.

02

Evidence & interpretation

Identified material and primary experimental research.

Selected bibliography

Documented works and useful reading. This is not a list of every appearance.

Taxonomic classification

A hierarchy of classified groups, not a chain of direct ancestors.

Source note: NIES labels both phylum and class Chromerida; CCAP instead uses phylum Apicomplexa. Their authority disagreement is preserved.
