Overview
L-Space identifies this Bursar as Dinwiddie, a reserved wizard happiest with arithmetic. Ridcully’s forceful leadership makes his university life increasingly difficult. The novels turn that strain into magical comedy: he contributes bewildering remarks at meetings, experiences impossible episodes and relies on the faculty’s dried-frog pills.
His colleagues initially tolerate these disruptions because he can still manage work nobody else wants. Later, Unseen Academicals shows his difficulty placing decimal points undermining that practical role, and Ponder Stibbons takes over the duties. The change separates a continuing member of the university’s cast from the administrative office by which readers know him.
