AI concept of Bunuba landscape and stewardship.
Landscape and field tools imagined; not ethnographic evidence.
Overview
The community’s Country account describes muwayi as landscapes together with the people responsible for them. Dawangarri are family groups associated with particular muwayi; thangani, language, and guru, kinship, connect these groups. Country thus encompasses relationships and responsibilities, rather than only a territory. The account places Bunuba in the West Kimberley, with many people living at Fitzroy Crossing.
Its stewardship account dates the formal Bunuba Ranger team to 2011, following earlier conservation employment. The Healthy Country Plan launched in 2018 brought community and conservation partners together across different land tenures. Work includes biodiversity surveys, fire management, weed control and park management. A women’s ranger programme established in 2018 created dedicated funded positions; women had already participated since 2011.
