Bu Darya in Kuwaiti sailors’ tales

Overview

In Sarah Al-Mukhaizeem’s 2019 account, Kuwaiti heritage researcher Hani Al-Asousi describes Bu Darya as half human and half fish. It cries for help at night, resembling someone drowning; when a sailor approaches, it seizes and drowns the would-be rescuer.

A separate 2024 interview with Salem Abdullatif Al-Misbah describes a human-looking water demon climbing aboard ships and dragging sailors underwater. Shouting and brandishing knives drive it back into the sea. These witnesses differ in visible form and encounter, rather than supplying one fixed anatomy.

Al-Misbah compares it with Al-Atoom, a literary sea creature with arms and fish-like tails but no legs. That comparison does not automatically transfer Al-Atoom’s anatomy to Bu Darya. The selected Kuwaiti tellings do not establish an exclusive national origin.
