Overview
In the Warree-yoola story, Blowfly remembers the food it has obtained from the refuse of a human camp. When a supernatural peccary keeper surrounds the people and forces them into creek water, the insect flies out along the main river to seek aid. Thunder is busy directing a storm from a stone canoe; Leewa is conducting waterspouts for the Sea-spirit. Both refuse the request because of their other duties.
Blowfly finally finds Deewass, the land-wind, asleep on a rock beneath a sung-sung tree. Awakened by the appeal, Deewass promises to come. Cold white mist carrying the smell of flowers moves downriver beneath the morning star. Leewa retreats sick to his deep pool, Thunder rises to the clouds, and the peccary keeper withdraws with his herd. The humans emerge alive. The rescue is accomplished through weather that discomforts the opposing beings, not through a narrated battle or their destruction.
Bell says an unnamed old man told him this episode after he shot the peccary keeper’s companion bird. The memoir’s preface explains its reconstruction from notes made during the author’s youth. No precise interview date or individually named Indigenous narrator is given for this story.
