Bith

Overview

Bith have very large rounded heads on humanoid bodies. In the inspected official band portrait, the smooth pale cranium dominates the face, with small dark eyes, a flattened nose and a compact mouth beneath it. These visible features distinguish the species without making the musicians' identical black costumes a biological characteristic.

The Databank describes an intelligent, peaceful people with scientific and musical aptitudes, originating on a planet also named Bith. It reports participation in galactic politics and loyalty to the Republic during the Clone Wars. Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes provide the best-known musical example, rather than proof that every individual works as a performer.

A Lucasfilm production feature credits Rick Baker with sketching the musicians and Doug Beswick with sculpting a head that was cast repeatedly. It also records George Lucas suggesting Benny Goodman's music for the performance. That documented production history concerns the cantina band; the unofficial illustration uses a newly imagined individual, instrument and room.

First appearances & development

Lucasfilm identifies the cantina band design as a collaboration involving Rick Baker's sketches and Doug Beswick's sculpture. The musical performance had a documented Benny Goodman reference.
