Overview
ANU Museum’s historical overview traces the Israelite School from its 1875 foundation to secondary education in 1892. It also describes an old-students’ union and women’s, charitable and credit associations. These institutions show several forms of communal organization; the account is not a current census or universal account of Jewish practice.
Isenberg’s museum essay, reprinted by My Jewish Learning, describes dispersed Kolaba village households, oil pressing and home-based communal prayer. Nineteenth-century choices varied with finances and contact with other Jewish communities. Later migration and cultural organizations maintained links with India; this does not establish a proven ancient ancestry.
