Overview
The revealed creature inhabits the darkness near Stromford, whose villagers have offered young women as sacrifices for generations. Ciri intervenes in the ritual surrounding Mioni and confronts the monster. The creature's threatening arms and close physical attack are only part of the danger: director Sebastian Kalemba describes its ability to sense fear, disturb a victim's mind and exploit the resulting confusion. The encounter therefore attacks the prospective hunter's judgment as well as her body. The publisher frames the cinematic as a self-contained story in which village prejudice and superstition complicate the attempt to save a life.
Kalemba and executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga directly identify Serbian folklore as an input, but this game treatment must remain distinct from a traditional bauk account. A later CDPR podcast gives a specific visual-development history: Marcin Klicki says the creature grew from a small concept showing arms and a head concealed behind trees, strongly favored by the art director. That testimony establishes how an incomplete image became a full design. The host's separate dinosaur and spider comparisons describe movement impressions; they are not equivalent to an artist naming a particular biological model. None of these witnesses supplies a finished gameplay weakness table, exact population or confirmed crafting reward.
First appearances & development
The creature's documented public appearance is the December 2024 cinematic reveal for The Witcher IV, made by CDPR with Platige Image. It is an announced game-world monster, not an encounter from a released 2024 game. The selected testimony continues through January 2026; final gameplay and a complete released bestiary remain outside this profile.
Canon & continuity
The publisher's reveal article verifies the contract, ritual and pre-rendered presentation. A directly inspected GameSpot interview supplies fear manipulation and the explicit folklore attribution. The official podcast transcript, independently read in a preserved HTML witness, supplies Klicki's concept-development account. A named intelligent monster is catalogued here by creature role, not as a documented civilization.

Concealed creature concept sketch
Marcin Klicki describes Bauk growing from a small concept showing arms and a head behind trees. This concerns Witcher IV’s announced production, not released-game behavior.
Serbian Bauk folklore
Mitręga confirms Serbian folklore as Bauk’s input in the reveal interview. The announced cinematic’s creature is not a complete account of Serbian traditions.
