Overview
Peterson’s Berkeley proceedings paper concerns Khumi varieties in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. Research from 1999–2001 examines verbal pronominal marking, revisiting earlier descriptions that had missed it. This profile keeps the Bangladesh variety distinct from other languages and dialects called Khumi.
His 2010 article analyses elaborate expressions in a naturalistic corpus. These paired, compound-like structures can involve copying, formally constrained elements or related meanings. Their functions include event intensification, distribution and emotional intensity; the analysis goes beyond treating them as merely decorative speech.
