Overview

The Met describes Bamana men weaving cotton strips and women applying plant extracts and mud through resist techniques. Apprentices learn meanings from their mothers; motifs can communicate proverbs, songs or historical events. Its early twentieth-century wrapper documents one composition, not a universal pattern. The museum also traces renewed Malian consumption and international fashion adaptation since 1970.
