Baba Marta, Bulgarian March

Overview

Radio Bulgaria’s Folk Studio describes Marta living high in the mountains with her brothers Big and Small Sechko, January and February. Her changing mood controls the weather: a smile brings spring, while a frown returns snow and winds. She is a personified month, not an identifiable historical woman.

In its wine tale, each sibling has a cask. After drinking their own, the brothers secretly empty Marta’s. Her anger sends storms; forgiveness brings blossoms. Another account punishes a defiant woman and goat with a blizzard. These are separate explanatory tales.

The broadcaster’s 2022 presentation connects Baba Marta with March-first wishes for health and fertility and exchanged red-and-white martenitsi. The continuing gift tradition is documented separately from the tales; imagined illustration cannot serve as evidence of a performed ritual.
