Overview

Kew accepts Aponogeton madagascariensis in Aponogetonaceae, with a native range including Comoros and Madagascar and an introduced record in Mauritius. Its synonym list connects several older names to the selected species. A botanical naming combination is not a date for the plant's evolutionary appearance.

Dauphinee and colleagues tested autophagy during the programmed cell death that creates leaf perforations. Cells between longitudinal and transverse veins follow different developmental fates, leaving a network. Microscopy found autophagic structures in healthy and dying cells. Enhancing autophagy decreased cell death rates in an assay; inhibitory treatments increased them. Yet whole-plant manipulation did not significantly change the final number of perforations. The authors favoured a contribution to cell survival, finding no clear evidence that autophagy directly initiates this developmental death.
