Overview
Apaosha confronts Tishtrya at Vouru-Kasha in the shape of a black horse. Darmesteter’s translation separately darkens its ears, back and tail and presents the appearance as terrifying. The two meet hoof against hoof and struggle for three days and nights.
Apaosha proves stronger in the first encounter and drives Tishtrya away. After Ahura Mazda strengthens the rain-bringing opponent through an invocation, the pair fight again and Apaosha is defeated by noon. The release of life-giving water follows the victory. This source gives a particular opposing animal form within the rain narrative, with success dependent on the worship and strength of its rival.
