AI Amborella flowering branch.
Alternate leaves and axillary flowers follow diagnosis; geometry and fine details imagined. Not a specimen or ancestral first flower.
Overview
Scrambling evergreen branches bear alternate leathery leaves with reticulate veins and wavy, slightly toothed margins. Small greenish-white flowers cluster in leaf axils. Bonn documents Grande Terre wet evergreen forest understory.
Bonn observers recorded male flowers first, then functionally male or female flowers during later flowering events. Female flowers had empty staminodes. This is a cultivated-plant observation, not a species-wide frequency estimate. The paper reports molecular placement as sister to other angiosperms; this does not make the living shrub an unchanged ancestor. Male flowers have greenish tepals and ten to fourteen stamens; female flowers have whitish to greenish tepals and several carpels.
Kew accepts Amborella trichopoda as a scrambling shrub or tree native to Central New Caledonia, growing primarily in the wet tropical biome. Its classification places the species in Amborellales, Amborellaceae and Amborella. These ranks identify a living taxon; they do not date its divergence or establish the ancestral appearance of flowering plants.
