Overview

Alpheus heterochaelis inhabits western Atlantic coastal waters, often sheltering beneath rocks and shells or on oyster reefs. The university account describes blue-green to grey, partly translucent bodies with darker speckles and orange concentrated on the head, tail and large claw. Adults have one modified snapping pincer and a smaller ordinary claw; the enlarged claw is not fixed to one side. No single depth limit is adopted from the account's inconsistent narrative and summary table.

Versluis and colleagues combined hydrophone measurements with controlled high-speed imaging. Rapid claw closure produced a water jet capable of forming a cavitation bubble. The loud sound occurred when that bubble collapsed, rather than at the instant the claw shut. Their bubble-dynamics model reproduced the observed radius changes and sound. This is evidence for a physical sequence, not an underwater fireball, a projectile fired from a hollow gun barrel, or a universal sound level for every shrimp.
