Overview

The University of California account describes Adalia bipunctata as convex from the side and oblong from above. Its common California adult form has reddish or orange wing covers with two black spots and a black-and-white pronotum. Other forms are mostly black with several coloured spots. The two-spotted common name therefore does not describe every individual.

Females lay clustered eggs beneath aphid-infested leaves. Larvae pass through four instars before pupating in the attached skin of the final instar. Adults and larvae consume aphids and other small plant-sucking insects.

Moore and colleagues varied hatchling density in small arenas and on fava bean plants. More larvae increased the chance of capturing an aphid in the small arenas, but shared meals did not produce a general improvement in individual survival. Survival also depended on experimental context. The study tests a proposed social-feeding advantage; it does not justify equating group prey capture with better survival for every larva.
