Overview

A Square is the geometric narrator of Abbott’s Flatland. He belongs to its professional class of squares, within a society that assigns status to bodily shapes. His world permits movement across a plane but no ordinary movement above or below it. Seen from outside that plane he has a square outline; inhabitants ordinarily perceive one another as lines. The later dialogue locates his eye at the junction of two sides, and the narrator explicitly warns that expressions such as sitting or standing do not imply feet.

His limitations become part of the story. In a dream of Lineland he struggles to explain a direction outside the inhabitants’ single line, yet subsequently dismisses his hexagonal grandson’s suggestion of a cubed number as nonsense. These episodes place him on both sides of a disagreement about what lies beyond familiar perception. His account also repeats the class and gender prejudices of Flatland; the revised-edition preface challenges his judgments and describes imprisonment as having changed some of them.

The visiting Sphere first appears as an apparently circular stranger whose visible size varies. A Square treats the explanations of height and solid bodies as unintelligible or fraudulent. The visitor moves a tablet out of a locked cupboard without using its doors, touches the narrator’s interior, and finally carries him out of the plane. From the higher viewpoint he sees the interiors of his pentagonal home and the figures within it, which he had previously known by inference.

The preface frames the memoir as the work of an ageing prisoner punished for teaching the third dimension. It acknowledges fading memory and imperfect terminology rather than making him an infallible guide. The selected character therefore combines testimony, mathematical analogy and social satire. An illustration showing his complete square from overhead adopts an explanatory outside viewpoint; it does not reproduce the line-like appearance available to a native Flatlander.
